Day 6, Where You Play
Genesis 1:27-28 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth."
Psalm 139:14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonder- fully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
1 Corinthians 12:4-6 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
1 Timothy 6:17 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncer- tainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.
1 Corinthians 9:19-23 For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them.To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.
1 Corinthians 10:31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
Heavenly Father, You are The Lord and creator of all things. You have created me in Your image, and blessed me as a unique expression of Your glory to display to the world. I am truly fearfully and wonderfully made. Lord I thank You for giving me specific gifts, interests, and talents to richly enjoy. Thank You that as I engage in activities I enjoy I can worship You through thanksgiving, remember- ing that it’s You who empowers me and everyone around me. Help me to see that all of my hobbies and interests are opportunities to declare the Gospel to the people around me. Lead me to people that are close to me yet far from You during my free time. Help me to see my time of play as an opportunity to serve and love those around me, being engaged to win them for the Gospel of your grace. Wherev- er You lead me, Father, give me a sound mind and faith to do everything for Your glory. In Jesus name I pray. Amen
(Gen. 1:27-28, Ps. 139:14, 1 Cor. 12:4-6, 1 Tim. 6:17, 1 Cor. 9:19-23, 1 Cor. 10:31)
We believe God has instilled you with interests and abilities for a purpose—so you can be a light for the Gospel among the people whose interests and abilities align with yours. Wherever you may spend your recreational time, go there today. As you are playing, be praying. Pray that God would make it plain to you how He would call you to leverage your play for His purpose of bringing people to Himself.
SUGGESTED FAMILY APPLICATION
This one is also pretty straightforward. Your kids play somewhere whether it be at the park, on a sports team, or in your neighborhood. They probably have some sort of hobby. This is an opportunity to teach them how God wants to use their interests to reach people. Help them seek God’s direction in building relationships where they play. Also, where they have opportunity, you do as well because you bring them to these places and can meet with other parents in the hope of building relationship with them.
